Frequently Asked Questions

Bike boxes

 

Bike boxes can be left in our office in Punta Arenas.

Prohibition of Bike Boxes
It is not permitted to use the bike boxes during the race, neither as bike boxes nor as gear bags. 

We will do our utmost to protect the bikes from any damage. However, we cannot be held responsible for any damage to the bikes that may arise during transportation.

Certificates



The kayak and rope certificates shall contain the following details:

  • Name of participant
  • date of birth of participant
  • country of participant
  • course and content of course
  • course duration
  • instructor who guided course
Compass

 

On buying a compass please consider that Patagonia/Tierra del Fuego is located on the Southern hemisphere.
Our recommendation: Compass “DP 6 Global System” by RECTA.

Other compasses can also be bought in Punta Arenas.

Please note: The prices of technical and outdoor equipment are higher in Punta Arenas than in Europe or the US.

Disciplines

 

We reserve the right to keep the percentages of every disciplines secret until one day before the race.

Flares

 

Flares will not be provided by the organization.

Flight schedules

 

Please let us know as soon as possible of your arrival and departure details. This simplifies organization of your transport from and to the airport.

Food

 

All racers have to bear the costs of food from the day of their arrival until their departure date.

Glow sticks

 

Size of the glow sticks is usually about 15 -20 cm.

Headlamps

 

For headlamps with two bulbs or LED-lights, an extra bulb is not required.

Some headlamps contain only one bulb/LED-light which could burn through. Therefore, an “extra bulb/LED" is required.

Kayaks

 

We do provide Necky® Amaruk™ Kayaks to every participating team during the race.
(Amaruk™ Polymer with front and back hatch).

Kayak certificate

 

At least one team member must show a kayak certificate (see “Certificates”).

Few days before the race our staff members will check the domination of the following kayak techniques of every team member:

It is recommended to send the kayak certificate as soon as possible by mail. This simplifies organization.

Logos

 

Logos of the race and of race sponsors will have to be sewn on specific points of your race outfit.

Medical accreditation

 

At least one team member has to present a medical accreditation that he or she has participated in a first-aid course.

Participants

 

All teams consist of four team members. Every team must consist of at least one woman and one man.

Race course


The race course that participants have to cover will be published 24 hours before the race.

Registration

 

To sign up, the registration form from our website has to be filled
After having sent your registration form, please wait for an acceptance letter of the race director.
After acceptance of your registration, please transfer the registration amount to confirm your participation.

Rope certificate

 

Every team member must present a rope certificate. Please refer to the above stated “Certificate” bullet.

Two days before the race, that means on February 10th our staff members will check the domination of the rope techniques of every team member:

  • General Knowledge
  • Fixed ropes
  • Rappelling

It is recommended to send the rope certificate as soon as possible by mail. This simplifies organization.

Satellite telephone

 

Satellite telephones will be provided by the organization. Before the race you will be trained how to use these phones.  

Solar protection

 

As sun radiation in Patagonia is very high it is required to use Sun protection of at least F 50.
More efficient: F 50+

Spray skirts

 

Spray skirts are provided by the organization. However, these skirts are not 100% waterproof and not very technical. So, if you have your own kayak skirts it is recommended to bring them with you.

Team name & details

 

The team’s name and details can be facilitated to the organization up to 30 days before the race.

Transitional Area

 

The race comprises approximately 10 Transitional Areas. If the discipline changes after one area you will find the bag for the following discipline in the respective Transitional Area.

VISA

 

Please inform yourself at the respective embassy or consulate in your country. They will give you advice about the steps to take for coming to Patagonia.

Weather conditions

 

Patagonian Weather conditions change constantly. This is one of the characteristics that form PATAGONIA EXPEDITION RACE. All teams got the information regarding the Patagonian Weather in the last newsletter of 2007. This newsletter can be received upon request.

Wetsuit

 

The thickness has to be of 4mm at legs and body and 3mm at the sleeves, to protect the team members from the cold water, as many racers have experienced hypothermia. Farmer john style wetsuits have to be of 5mm thickness.
