PATAGONIA EXPEDITION RACE takes place in one of the most spectacular, isolated and pristine parts of our planet: southern Patagonia, the extreme southern point of South America. The region is sparsely populated, where one can travel for hundreds of kilometres without seeing any signs of human presence. This savage territory presents a great challenge to the race organizers: roads or even paths to travel over land are scarce; sea routes follow a labyrinth of canals; and even air access is often limited or even completely blocked due to the weather.

Since 2002, a team of people with a broad range of experience in expedition sports has worked on the general design of the race, and on the details of hundreds of kilometres of routes through this complicated region. Nómadas Ltda. is the company created to direct and coordinate all aspects of this international sporting event. In the weeks and months prior to the start of the race, dozens of people, companies, institutions and Chilean governmental organizations come together to create the team that organizes this race.

To put PATAGONIA EXPEDITION RACE together, we have had to put together a multi-disciplinary team of people capable of rising to the technical aspects, and of facing the challenge of working in a landscape that is remote, wild, and at times hostile. The core group of organizers is formed of an international team who are professionals in the fields of earth sciences, and who are experienced mountain and kayak guides. The collective experience of this group includes scientific and sporting expeditions to Asia, North America, South America, Oceania, and even the Arctic and Antarctica, more than two decades of experience exploring our planet. Bringing together their complementary experience, this remarkable team creates the distinctive character, style and spirit that is PATAGONIA EXPEDITION RACE.

The general director of the event and race director is Stjepan Pavicic: geologist and mountaineer, with more than 20 years of experience in voyages, ascents, and both scientific and sporting expeditions throughout Chile, and especially in southern Patagonia. Although the idea of creating a race through Patagonia first came to him in 1984, only recently in the year 2000 did he start to work at giving a concrete form to his idea, creating PATAGONIA EXPEDITION RACE , the adventure at the end of the world.
